This shield was made by Fred Mandraby, who actually made this turtle design shield held by the South Australian Museum Registry No. A27377”, NB Tindale Journal (AA 338/1/15/1-2), p.462. Fred was the son of Fred Mandinggarabai and wife Martha, who was a resident at the Yarrabah Mission near Cairns in the 1930s, and an important informant for anthropologists Ursula McConnel (1888-1957) and Norman Tindale (1900-93) who each independently collected data about the rainforest groups, Source: http://archives.samuseum.sa.gov.au/aa346/AA346-09.htm#BAR-00054; There is also a photo of Fred Mandinggarabai, son of Jimmy Jupulum Mundingumpi (Yidinji man) holding this shield.
